Chess Books Reviews / Khalifman A. Opening for white according to Anand 1.e4, V.1 (2004)

Opening for white according to Anand V. 1 How does write the debuts monographs? Full and interestingly, by conscientious chess workers?! Alas, as a rule, picture is not so idyllic here, as appears an ordinary chess "user". Usually an author, collecting and fluently studying games of known and not very much known chess-players, makes the review of all conceivable continuations of white and black, the same fugitive and incomplete. For the estimation of final position comments serve as a basic criterion not always objective winner, and if such not present, yet more "reliable" index is a result of game. "Original recommendations" read out from else's notes, a strategic ground under variants is not tricked into, and a reader needs only to wonder a foresight and penetrating of grand master of translating knight with b2 on h8. The similar reference books of debuts, abandoning sense of dissatisfaction and easy fastidiousness for a reader, are not uncommon, unfortunately, in our days.

The book which speech will go here about (Khalifman A.V. Opening for white according to Anand 1.е4, volume 1 . - Spb.: Garde, 2004. - 280 p.) very curious on the structure and, undoubtedly, can not be taken to such a "literature". Strictly speaking, it can not be named a monograph in the generally accepted sense of word. It, perhaps, special genre which needs to tell more detailed about.

Already from top pages it is possible to see mass of moments, not typical for the usual look of debut monograph. An author doesn't set the problem above all things to show all conceivable possibilities black and white in a concrete debut (in our case it is the Latvian gambit, defence of Filidora, Russian party, Spanish party without a6), but to show the best answers forwhite on any reasonable move of black.

It ensues from said, that to name this work as a debut monograph at least inexactly. Task which is put by an author, a few unusual, attractive and difficult simultaneously - concrete help in the construction of all-embracing debut repertoire after 1. е4 е5 2. Кf3 for white. I'll say at once: an author does not interest working out problems of black . Rather vice versa - black must have problems any case!

Did it have you to play white against the Latvian gambit, modern interpretation of defence of Filidor, Spanish without a6? Rareness of their application in our days causes at most chess-players scornful attitude toward these continuations, which is quickly dispersed behind a board. A "error" and "incorrecrness" of these charts of debuts is necessary to be proved the special preparation, to help in which, this book is called.

Russian party stands individually (opening is superpopular on grand master Olympus). It is difficult to wait grandiose novelties and refutations here, but also in this part an author succeeded to bring in the study of age-old debut ponderable small contribution.

Big plus is aspiration of author to show not only and not so much old well-trodden ways in a fight for preponderance. In many cases original analyses are brought over, perspective new continuations are recommended, which will be surprise for any well grounded in theory opponent. In a book it is possible to find mass of novelties, "debut bombs", that just wait their time.

A book is advantageously distinguished from most reference books of debuts by embodiment of idea, outspoken first, seems by Lipnitsky - about a necessity to demonstrate variants, sewing them in living fabric of chess recital of ideas of inherent to one or another debut construction.

About failings. There is not much and they as frequently is in life, follow in most from dignities of book. A concept "The best motion" in chess, certainly, tensile, and not for everyone, perchance, a subjective choice of author will be liking in one or another case. The easy doubting causes interpretation of debut "by Anand" - Anand plays sometime quite other systems. However, here rather the question is about accordance of the recommended systems actively-position style of Anand, instead of to his debut repertoire. In short, Anand not always plays so, but he would approve almost everything smile. But to the variants, carping is difficult even at a desire. Yes, it is possible to find some errors in analyses, debatable recommendations, but general ever-higher level offered to the reader of chess material does not cause doubts.

Completing this review, it is desirable to recommend a reader an acquaintance with this useful in all respects book, which will be interesting for chess-player of any level - from beginner to grand master.
